The honest answer
Most early-stage startups do not need a mobile app. A website that works properly on a phone will serve you better, cost less, and get you to real feedback sooner. An app also has to be installed, which is a much bigger ask than opening a link.
Build the app when
The product needs the phone itself. Camera, location in the background, push notifications, working offline, fingerprint login. A website cannot do these the way an app can.
People will open it most days. An icon on the home screen is only worth the install if there is a reason to come back. Something used twice a year does not earn that space.
Two sides have to meet. Buyers and sellers, donors and recipients, drivers and riders. Live updates and notifications are the whole product, and that is app territory.
A website is enough when
- What you offer is mostly information, pages or a catalogue
- People buy or book now and then, not daily
- You are still finding out whether anyone wants it
- Budget is tight, in which case build the web version first and add the app when the demand is proven
